Parasites.

As life continues to evolve,

         so shall THIS PAGE.

Modified ruminents acquire both internal and external parasites.

Some may be beneficial.  Others can compromise health or death if untreated.

Be proactive in your approach to supervising the behaviour of animals under your care.

Do not disqualify even the slightest abnormal behavior.

Lethargy, depression, little or no interest in food/water, to name a few, are precursors to a myriad of potential life threating issues.
  • I promote good routine housekeeping, use of poultry, and appropriate, modest use of deworming products.
  • Most dewormers utilized for goats, sheep and cows will be suitable for camelids.  In doubt, ASK YOUR VET!

  • When in doubt...fecal sample assist in the identification of parasites to select appropriate dewormer and dosage.

There is never a good substitue to a veterinarian.

Consult your veterinarian for diagnosis, prevention, and treatment.
    • Remove dung daily!  Don't let it pile up as you are only asking for trouble.
    • Maintain adequate drainage in & around communial areas.
    • Frequent bedding changes, and low animal density will also help to control parasite numbers.
  • Any new animals to a farm should be quarantined, checked for external parasites and dewormed before introduction into the herd.
    • Coccidia (Eimeria sp.) and giardia can be more common in young. In certain areas wet pastures and crowded animal density can propagate these parasites. Routine dewormers do not control coccidia.

    Meningeal

    Tapeworm

    Lice & Mange

    Internal

Gastrointestinal nematodes, lungworms, meningeal worms, tapeworms, and flukes.
The most commonly observed stomach worms are Haemonchus, Ostertagia, and Trichostrongylus species.

Whipworms (Trichuris) and the thready-necked strongyle (Nematodirus) require selective oral dewormers.

Liver flukes and the meningeal parasite (Parelaphostrongylus) can be deadly certain areas of the US.

    External

Flies, lice, mites, ticks, and the deer nasal bot can affect alpacas & llamas.

Each parasite are naturally occuring life cycles that can be managed if identified.
Except for the deer nasal bot, the other external parasites in the llama can be treated with pesticides approved for use in cattle

Although ticks are uncommon, cases of tick paralysis and Lyme disease have been reported.
Ear ticks are an increasingly important problem and can be treated with most ear mite medications.
